The book accompanies the exhibition Azulejos: The Pearls of Portugal at the Adamson-Eric Museum (04.04.–07.09.2025). This book introduces the rich history and artistic diversity of the Portuguese ceramic tiles called azulejos. Although Portugal is known for its cities covered with azulejos, this phenomenon did not occur overnight. Azulejos have been applied throughout the last five hundred years on the walls of different types of buildings: palaces and religious houses initially, and later on the façades of residential buildings and in public spaces, such as markets, train and underground stations, gardens and parks, viaducts and airports. Nowadays azulejos are everywhere, and a new generation of artists, architects and designers are committed to renewing this art form. The colourful and detailed tiles tell an engaging story of history, religion, and people’s everyday life, taking the viewer on an exciting journey to different eras.
