The Odyssey - Cranford Edition A epic adventure, loyalty and homecoming The Odyssey tells the extraordinary story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his long, perilous journey home after the Trojan War. After ten years of battle, he is forced to wander the seas for another decade, facing storms, monsters and the anger of the god Poseidon. At the poem’s opening, Odysseus is held on the distant island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso, who wishes to keep him as her husband. Moved by the suffering of his family, the gods finally decide he must be released. In Ithaca Back home, his wife Penelope remains faithful despite relentless pressure from suitors who believe Odysseus is dead. They consume the household’s wealth and demand she choose a new husband. Their son, Telemachus, now nearing adulthood, sets out to find news of his father, guided by the goddess Athena, who takes a special interest in the family’s fate. Odysseus’ Trials After leaving Ogygia, Odysseus is shipwrecked by Poseidon and washes ashore in the land of the Phaeacians. There he recounts the remarkable adventures that have delayed him: His escape from the Cyclops Polyphemus His time with the enchantress Circe His passage past the deadly Sirens His confrontation with the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis Each challenge reveals his intelligence, resilience and unwavering desire to return home. The Homecoming The Phaeacians eventually carry him back to Ithaca, where he arrives disguised as a beggar. With Telemachus and a few loyal servants, he plans to reclaim his household. Penelope proposes a contest using Odysseus’s great bow — a weapon only he can string. When he succeeds, he reveals his identity and defeats the suitors, restoring peace. The poem ends with the long‑awaited reunion of Odysseus and Penelope, celebrating loyalty, courage and the enduring pull of home.
