The Sun Also Rises is a fictional account of Ernest Hemingway’s time in Paris France from the early to mid 1920s. Without a doubt his most important novel. This powerful, tersely written novel displays all the stylistic and narrative command that would make Hemingway a household name. The events follow a trip from France to Spain for the Pamplona festival and fishing in the Pyrenees. The Sun Also Rises explores themes of masculinity, love, and death in a lost generation that came of age during the First World War. Despite the Lost Generation being broken and scarred in many ways, Hemingway’s intention was to show that his generation was in fact strong and resilient. This is one of the first great American novels, simply a masterpiece.
